Police raid in Brazil
The operation that police launched on Tuesday night against Rio de Janeiro's oldest gang has left 64 people dead so far. But the details of the operation, or the actions of both sides, were revealed on Wednesday morning. In the morning, people could see the bodies of the dead and guess that this operation could be the best in Brazilian history.
Meanwhile, Reuters photographer Ricardo Moraes tried to figure out what was going on in the operation. But it revealed something else. Many people may have trouble understanding the whole story by looking at the picture, but it shows the roof of the house and something lying in the middle of the road. If you look closely, you will see that the things in the middle are nothing but the bodies of the dead. These bodies are lying on the street in a business area.
After the police operation on Wednesday, residents of the Penha neighbourhood in Rio de Janeiro spent the night searching for their missing relatives and neighbours. While searching, they went from their homes to the hilltops and found bodies scattered there. Later, citizen search teams started loading the bodies into vans and dropping them at the entrance to the Cruzeiro favela. This Cruzeiro favela is one of hundreds of poor and informal settlements spread across the hills of Rio de Janeiro. Then, photographer Moraes arrived there on Wednesday morning. And he was surprised to see the bodies. Especially in the commercial area, in the playground, there were only dead bodies everywhere.
And the people around were just looking at the bodies. In front of him, a woman was seen pulling the body of a dead person away. The body was nothing but underwear. After that, he tried to find out what happened on that sad night. He realised that to fully understand this incident, he would have to fly a drone. But flying a drone was very dangerous. Because the police and drug gangs in that area were in a drone dispute. After talking to the local community leader, Moraes got permission and started flying the drone.
Although the bodies in front were clearly visible in the pictures taken from the ground, the long rows of bodies were blurred by the drone. However, in the pictures taken from above with the drone, each body was seen separately. As the sun was moving towards sunset, the authorities were moving the bodies on one side, putting them in another pickup van on the other side, and bringing the bodies in. Thus, the number of bodies exceeded about 100. Meanwhile, Rio Governor Claudio Castro said after the raid that all but four police officers were suspected of being involved in drug trafficking. At the time, police said that the raid was carried out after months of planning. In addition, the police knew in advance that carrying out such an operation would result in many deaths.
