The war between Thailand and Cambodia is starting again. Why? Find out the details

Thailand vs Cambodia War again

Last July, a ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia was brokered by Donald Trump. The two countries have now engaged in a new conflict. After engaging in a new conflict, Thailand announced in a statement that it would take steps to withdraw Cambodian forces from Thai territory on Tuesday, December 9, 2025.

Such measures are being taken after new conflicts spread across the disputed border area between Thailand and Cambodia. Thailand has cited the new conflict as the reason for taking such steps. On the other hand, Cambodia has placed full responsibility for this new conflict on Thailand. Today, December 9, 2025, Cambodia has announced that two civilians have died in this new conflict.

However, the number of Cambodian deaths has reached 6 since the ceasefire. A Thai soldier was also killed in the new clash. Meanwhile, in a statement this morning, the Thai navy said that Cambodian forces had been seen inside the Thai coastal province of Trat.

A military operation has been launched to remove them. No further details were given. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen said on Monday night, “Thailand should not use military force on civilian villages under the pretext of restoring its sovereignty.” Earlier, Cambodia said that its own forces had come under sustained attack but had not retaliated.

The Thai navy said that Cambodian forces were increasing their presence in the border area, deploying snipers and heavy weapons, strengthening bunkers and digging new trenches. The navy said that it viewed these activities as a direct and serious threat to Thailand’s sovereignty. Thailand and Cambodia fought a five-day conflict in July.

Both countries have fired rockets and shelled each other. At least 48 people have been killed and 300,000 displaced in the conflict. A ceasefire was brokered by President Trump. The fighting on Sunday was the most intense since the July conflict. Meanwhile, Thailand has evacuated 438,000 civilians from five border provinces.

Cambodian authorities have also said that hundreds of thousands of people have been evacuated to safer places. The Thai military said 18 of its soldiers were injured, while the Cambodian government said nine civilians were injured. Thailand and Cambodia share an 817-kilometre land border.

They have been locked in a dispute over sovereignty over parts of the border for more than a century. Tensions between the two countries rose after a Cambodian soldier was killed in a clash in May. The incident led to a massive military deployment along the border, which has strained diplomatic relations.
