A total of 9 people have been arrested so far in the raids on Prothom Alo and The Daily Star. The raids were conducted in many districts and upazilas of Bangladesh. This information was first received by the Press Wing of the Adviser today (December 22).
Two of the 9 people arrested have been arrested by the Terrorism Unit of the police and the Detective Branch. Although the identities of the two people have not been confirmed yet, the names of the remaining seven people have been known - Md. Kashem Faruk (a student of a madrasa in Bogra), Md. Saidur Rahman (a resident of Noanda village in Faridpur), Rakib Hossain (a resident of Sherpur), Md. Naim (a resident of Tejgaon Kunipara Elakor in Dhaka), Faisal Ahmed Prant, Md. Sohel Rana and Md. Shafiqul Islam.
It is worth mentioning that among the arrested persons, Rakib Hossain of Sherpur district was identified through video footage as one of the perpetrators of the vandalism and arson in the two establishments. Among them, Md. Naeem of Tejgaon was arrested along with the money looted during the attack. He himself has admitted to the matter.
After news of Sharif Osman Hadi's death broke out in Singapore on Thursday (December 18), people protested in almost all parts of Bangladesh demanding justice for those involved in Hadi's murder. At the same time, they vandalized, looted, and set fire to the offices of Prothom Alo and The Daily Star.
