How Dick Cheney got into politics

Dick Cheney entered politics very slowly and deliberately. His journey began as a political researcher and administrative assistant. Before entering politics, he was a student, academic researcher, and government staffer. Dick Cheney was selected for the Congressional Fellowship Program while pursuing his PhD at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1966. He took advantage of this opportunity to work in the US Congress.

He worked under Congressman William Steiger — this is where his hands-on experience in administrative and policy-making began. After that, in 1969, during the tenure of President Richard Nixon, he was appointed as a White House Staff Assistant under Donald Rumsfeld. Rumsfeld can be said to be his political mentor. Under Rumsfeld's influence, Cheney became deeply involved in the Republican Party.

Then, when President Gerald Ford came to power in 1974-1977 (after Nixon), Dick Cheney was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff, and later as White House Chief of Staff (1975). At the age of 34, he became the youngest Chief of Staff in the White House. From this position, he demonstrated his skills in administration, security, and relations with Congress.

In 1978, he ran for the U.S. House of Representatives from Wyoming. He won the election for the Republican Party and served six consecutive terms (1979–1989) as a member of Congress. During this time, he served as House Republican Conference Chairman and a member of the House Intelligence Committee. President George H. W. Bush appointed him as U.S. Secretary of Defence in 1989.

Cheney led Operation Desert Storm (1991) — that is, he was the head of the US Department of Defence during the Gulf War. His success during this time made him known as a "strong leader" on the national level. He temporarily left politics and became CEO of Halliburton Company (a large oil and gas company).

His administrative and international experience later played a major role in his policymaking. In 2000, Republican candidate George W. Bush nominated him for vice president. After winning the election, he served as Vice President of the United States from 2001–2009. He was a key architect of national security, the Iraq War, and counterterrorism policies after the 9/11 attacks.
