Gunmen have killed 11 people, including a three-year-old child, in a shooting at a hostel in the South African capital, Pretoria, police say. The shooting took place in a hidden bar in the hostel. The attack took place at around 4:30 a.m. local time on Saturday in the Saulsville municipality, 18 kilometres west of Pretoria. South Africa, a country of 63 million people, has one of the highest murder rates in the world. Police spokeswoman Athlenda Mathay said three gunmen entered an illegal bar inside the hostel and opened fire on a group of people drinking alcohol. A total of 25 people were shot in the attack. 14 of them were taken to the hospital. 10 died on the spot, and one died later. The dead included a 12-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl. Mathay said it was an unfortunate incident. Police learned about the incident around 6 a.m.

However, the police have not yet determined the motive for the killings. The police spokesman added, “These illegal bars are a big challenge for us. Because most of the shootings take place in these places. Ordinary people also lose their lives in these shootings.” South Africa, Africa’s most industrialised country, is struggling to control crime and corruption. Organised gangs are involved in these incidents. Shootings have become a regular occurrence in the country. Most of the attacks are caused by drinking and gang violence. According to police data, about 63 people were killed every day in the country between April and September this year. Most of the killings are due to disputes.
