Fire in Hong Kong
A massive fire has engulfed multiple buildings in a 31-storey residential complex in Hong Kong. At least four people have been killed and three others injured. Two of the injured are in critical condition. The local fire service received a report of the fire at 2:51 pm local time on Wednesday. The residential complex is located in the Tai Po area of northern Hong Kong.
The complex is called Wong Fuk Court. The complex consists of eight blocks and has about 2,000 flats. Upon receiving the news, fire service workers quickly went to the scene and started extinguishing the fire and trying to rescue residents trapped inside.
According to the BBC report, in a statement, the Hong Kong government said that seven people were rescued and taken to hospital, where doctors on duty declared four dead. According to the police, state broadcaster RTHK reported that some people are still trapped inside some of the burning buildings. Several fire service workers were also injured while extinguishing the fire.
Witnesses said they saw numerous fire engines and ambulances on the streets below the complex after the fire broke out. Hong Kong is one of the few countries in the world where bamboo scaffolding is still used in building construction. Hong Kong's Transport Department said a section of Tai Po Road had been closed due to the fire. Traffic on the road was being diverted.
