Various branches of the Muslim Brotherhood are banned

US President Donald Trump has ordered his aides to begin the process of designating branches of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, Lebanon and Jordan as "terrorist" organizations. Trump alleged that these branches of the Muslim Brotherhood support the Palestinian independence militant group Hamas. The United States has intensified pressure on Israel's enemies in the Middle East.

Trump issued this order on Monday. The order states that leaders of the Jordanian Muslim Brotherhood are providing Hamas with various equipment and that the organization's Lebanese branch is taking the side of Hamas and Hezbollah in the war with Israel. The Lebanese branch of the Muslim Brotherhood is known as Al-Jamaa Al-Islamiya. Trump's order also states that a leader of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood called for violent attacks on "United States allies and interests" during Israel's war in Gaza. It is not clear what the White House meant by this.

The Muslim Brotherhood is banned in Egypt. It has been operating there mostly in secret. The White House said President Trump was targeting the Muslim Brotherhood’s transnational network, which incites terrorism and destabilizing activities against U.S. interests and allies in the Middle East. Trump’s order said Jordanian Muslim Brotherhood leaders were providing Hamas with equipment and its Lebanese branch was siding with Hamas and Hezbollah in its war with Israel.

The Lebanese branch of the Muslim Brotherhood is known as Al-Jama’a Al-Islamiya. Trump’s order asked the U.S. secretaries of state and treasury to prepare a report on the matter within 30 days, in consultation with the country’s intelligence chief. Within 45 days of submitting the report, the Muslim Brotherhood branches will be officially designated as “foreign terrorist organizations.” The process is a formality. The designation could happen quickly. Trump’s order paves the way for other branches of the Muslim Brotherhood to be added to the banned list.

The White House is also seeking to designate the groups as “global terrorists.” The White House said President Trump is targeting the Muslim Brotherhood’s transnational network, which incites terrorism and destabilizing activities against U.S. interests and allies in the Middle East. The designation would make it illegal to provide any assistance to the Muslim Brotherhood. It would also bar most of the group’s current and former members from entering the United States. It would also open the door to economic sanctions to cut off the group’s source of income.

The Muslim Brotherhood was founded in 1928 by Egyptian Muslim thinker Hassan al-Banna. The organization has various branches in the Middle East. Political parties affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood participate in elections in various countries in the Middle East. The organization claims that they are committed to peaceful political participation. However, the Muslim Brotherhood is banned in various countries in the Middle East.
