President Donald Trump's approval rating rose to 41 per cent last week, as Republicans increasingly supported his handling of the cost of living, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll. The six-day survey ended on Monday. It showed the president's approval rating rose slightly from 38 per cent at the end of last month, the lowest since Trump returned to the White House in January.

He was at 47 per cent when he began his second term. Republicans suffered in several state elections in November. Democrats have been hard-hit by the Trump administration's persistently high inflation. But Trump has been more vocal in recent weeks, rolling back some of his tax increases and promising to take action on high food prices.

The poll also showed signs of a slight recovery in his popularity as the Trump administration has focused on affordable living policies. But Trump has previously described Democrats’ emphasis on high inflation as a “hoax.” The poll shows the president’s approval rating has risen slightly from 38 percent at the end of last month, the lowest since Trump returned to the White House in January. His approval rating was 47 percent at the start of his second term.

The poll found 31 percent approval for Trump’s handling of the cost of living, one of his weakest areas of popularity, up from 26 percent in late November. A 10-point increase in Republican approval among Republicans has boosted Trump’s approval rating, with 69 percent of Republicans giving him a favorable rating on the issue. Overall, his approval rating as president has reached 85 percent, up from 82 percent last month. The United States has been plagued by inflation since the time of Trump’s predecessor, President Joe Biden. The economic issue has helped Trump win the 2024 presidential election against Biden's Vice President Kamala Harris.

Inflation has also been high under the Trump administration. In the United States, consumer prices rose 3 percent in the 12 months through September. This increase has traditionally averaged around 2 percent. Trump's rise in popularity is also being driven by a slight increase in support among Hispanics, a group that leaned toward Trump during last year's election.

Trump's overall rise in popularity is being driven by a slight increase in support among Hispanics, a group that leaned toward Trump during last year's election. In the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll, 34 percent of Hispanics said they approve of Trump's performance, up from 32 percent in a late November poll. The latest poll was conducted online. 4,434 U.S. adults from across the country participated in the poll. The margin of error is 2 percentage points.
