The Malaysian government has taken a tough stance on the use of social media. Many believe that this decision by the Malaysian government could create problems for the country's teenagers.

Malaysian government imposes new restrictions

Malaysia is going to ban the use of social media for teenagers under the age of 16. This decision may be implemented from next year. Recently, some countries in Australia and Europe have taken initiatives to impose strict restrictions on the use of social media for children. This time Malaysia is also going to be added to that list.

Malaysian Communications Minister Fahmy Fadzil said on Sunday that the cabinet approved this step as part of a larger effort to protect the young generation from harmful things such as cyberbullying, fraud and sexual harassment. Fadzil said that in this case, the government will follow the methods adopted by Australia and other countries. Age will be verified electronically through identity cards or passports. Fahmy Fadzil also said,

"I believe that if the government, regulatory agencies and parents all do their part, we are sure that Malaysia's internet will not only be fast, widespread and affordable, but also safe for children and families." Malaysia is going to bring social media and messaging platforms, which have at least 8 million users, under license from next January.

This is part of a broader effort to tighten government oversight of digital platforms. Licensed platforms will have to implement age verification, content safety measures and transparency policies. Recently, the Australian parliament became the first country in the world to pass a law banning social media for those under 16. The law will come into effect on December 10.

Violations of the law could result in fines of up to 50 million Australian dollars (33 million US dollars) for Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Threads, TikTok, X, YouTube, Reddit and live streaming service Kik. The Danish government is also planning to ban social media for children under 15. It announced this earlier this month. Another European country, Norway, is also working on a draft law banning social media for teenagers under 15.
