Meeting between Russian and US officials
The United States has stepped up efforts to end the nearly four-year-old war between Russia and Ukraine. After meeting with Ukraine in Geneva, Switzerland, US officials are meeting with Russia in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The aim is to convince Moscow and Kiev of US President Donald Trump's plan to end the war. The meeting between US Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll and Russian officials took place in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday.
Although no announcement was made in advance about the meeting, there were plans for more meetings between the two sides yesterday. Although Reuters confirmed the meeting, citing sources, nothing was known about the content of the discussions. It is also unclear who participated in today's meeting from the Russian side.
A US official said that Dan Driscoll may also hold talks with Ukrainian officials in Abu Dhabi. In addition, officials from Moscow and Kiev may come together at the negotiating table in Abu Dhabi under the mediation of the US regarding Trump's peace proposal. Recently, the issue of Trump's 28-point peace plan has been in the spotlight. After allegations from Ukraine that many of the points in the plan are close to Russia,
Washington held talks with representatives of Kiev and Europe in Geneva on Sunday. There, some changes were made to the plan to convince Kiev. At the same time, the points were reduced from 28 to 19. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov spoke about this peace plan at a press conference in Moscow. Today, he said that Russia welcomed the original plan prepared by Trump.
However, if any amendments are made to the plan, it must reflect the 'spirit' of the meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska last August. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who initially objected to Trump's plan, seemed quite satisfied after the amendments. After a phone call with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, he said that his country sees 'a lot of potential' for peace after discussions with US officials in Geneva.
Russia and Ukraine exchanged heavy artillery fire overnight Monday amid ceasefire talks. Ukrainian officials said at least six people were killed in Russian shelling of the capital, Kiev. At least three people were killed in Ukrainian airstrikes in Russia's Rostov region.
According to information provided by Volodymyr Zelensky, Russian forces have fired 22 missiles and more than 460 drones into Ukraine. Ukraine's Energy Ministry said the attacks were carried out from Russia on various energy facilities and civilian buildings in the country.
