An extremely chaotic situation has arisen at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata due to the inability to see Argentine star Lionel Messi properly. Angry spectators vandalised the gallery. They threw broken chairs and bottles on the field. At one stage, a couple of thousand spectators even climbed the fence and entered the field.
Messi left the field at the beginning of such a chaotic situation. He had set foot in Kolkata today on a three-day tour of India. Messi is scheduled to visit three more cities in India along with Inter Miami teammates Luis Suarez and Rodrigo de Paul.
According to the pre-determined schedule, Messi was supposed to enter the Yuva Bharti and take a lap of honour around the gallery. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan were also supposed to come to the field later. Apart from this, there was also an exhibition match in which Messi was supposed to participate. But due to the chaotic situation, everything has been cancelled.
According to the Times of India, Messi's car entered the Salt Lake Stadium at 11:30 am local time. As soon as he got out of the car, several people surrounded him. The audience in the gallery waited for a while, but could not see him properly and started chanting 'We want Messi'. At that time, Messi could only be seen on the giant screen of the stadium. But as there were about 70-80 people surrounding Messi, he could not be seen well there either.
To control the situation, Sports Minister Arup Biswas and tour organiser Shatdru Dutta requested the crowd to disperse through the microphone. However, the situation did not return to normal. Some people kept walking around Messi, some tried to take selfies and videos next to him and in front. Meanwhile, the audience in the gallery started shouting after not seeing Messi. Some even started throwing bottles. At one point, Messi got annoyed and left the field.

The spectators became even angrier after they were unable to see Messi properly and after he left. Many started breaking chairs and throwing them on the field. They also tore banners. At one point in the chaos, the spectators broke the fence and entered the field. The entire field was taken over by the angry spectators. The situation went beyond the control of the police at this time.
All the arrangements that were made for Messi's arrival were cancelled. The Indian Express reported that many spectators who had come to the gallery had to buy tickets at high prices. They expressed their anger at not being able to see Messi despite spending a minimum of 3800 to a maximum of 11800 rupees.
Messi is scheduled to leave for Hyderabad from Kolkata today. From there, 'The Goat Tour India' will end with a visit to Delhi via Mumbai.
