Nepal: Massive rally of ousted Prime Minister's party in Gen-G movement

The political party of the ousted Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has held a huge rally. It is the largest political rally in the Himalayan country since the youth movement three months ago. The rally was held in the capital Kathmandu on Saturday.

Police estimate that 70,000 people took part in Saturday's rally in the Bhaktapur area near Kathmandu. It marks the start of a three-day convention of Oli's party, the Communist Party of Nepal. Before the rally, organisers had said that three lakh people could attend the rally.

Nepali political analyst Puranjan Acharya said that this is the largest rally of any political party since the youth anti-corruption movement in Nepal. That movement and the subsequent violence last September left 77 people dead. More than 2,000 were injured.

Several important government buildings, including the Prime Minister's Office, Parliament and the Supreme Court, were set on fire during the protest. At that time, several politicians, including Oli, were rescued and kept safe by the army. The movement and subsequent violence caused a loss of $586 million in Nepal.

After the Oli government was ousted, an interim government was formed in Nepal. Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki was appointed as the head of that government. Oli stated in a rally on Saturday that the formation of an interim government by dissolving the parliament was illegal according to the constitution. He has also been demanding new elections in Nepal.

Oli also said that they are being portrayed as anti-Gen-G. However, that is not true. At the rally, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Nepal Shankar Pokhrel said that although they have been forced to give up power, they are still in the hearts of the people. The huge presence of people at the rally is proof of that.

More than 2,000 delegates will vote to choose the new party president at the convention of the Communist Party of Nepal tomorrow, Monday. The current president of the party is Oli himself. He is being contested by Ishwar Pokhrel. Nepal's largest communist party will participate in the parliamentary elections under the leadership of the new president. Parliamentary elections are scheduled for March 5 in the country.
