Raed Saad among 386 killed in Israeli attacks after ceasefire

Israel had previously reported that senior Hamas commander Raed Saad was killed in an Israeli airstrike in the Gaza Strip, Palestine. This time, Hamas also confirmed that Saad was killed.

A ceasefire between Hamas and Israel came into effect on October 10. Even then, Israel has been carrying out attacks on the Gaza Strip at various times. According to Gaza authorities, there have been about 800 attacks even during the ceasefire. At least 386 people have been killed in these attacks.

Raed Saad is the highest Hamas leader to be killed in an Israeli attack since the ceasefire came into effect last October.

Israeli media reported on Sunday that Raed Saad was killed in an attack near Gaza City last Saturday. At least 25 people were injured in the attack.

Later, the Israeli army confirmed the killing of Raed Saad in a statement yesterday. The statement said that the attack on a vehicle was carried out with the cooperation of Israel's internal intelligence agency, Shin Bet.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office also confirmed the attack in a statement. However, there was no information about the killing of Raed Saad in that statement.

Hamas initially did not announce the killing of the senior commander. Later, the organisation's Gaza chief, Khalil al-Hayya, issued a video statement yesterday. In it, Khalil confirmed the killing of Raed Saad in Saturday's attack. He also claimed that Israel had violated the terms of the ceasefire.

Khalil said, "Israel has repeatedly violated the ceasefire agreement, the latest addition to which is the killing of the Hamas commander (Raed Saad). This incident happened yesterday. In this context, we call on all mediators, and in particular the US administration and President Donald Trump, as the main guarantor of the agreement, to force Israel to respect and abide by the ceasefire agreement.

According to the European Council on Foreign Relations, Raed Saad is a senior member of the military council of the Qassem Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas. He served as the head of the Qassem Brigades’ operations and production department. He was also considered the ‘second in command’ or second-in-command of this armed wing.

In a previous statement from the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office, Raed Saad was also accused of being “one of the main planners” of the October 7, 2023, attack.
