6.6 magnitude earthquake hits Indonesia

A strong earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale struck Simeulue Island off the coast of West Sumatra, Indonesia. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake, which struck at 11:56 a.m. local time on Thursday, had a depth of 25 kilometres.

There were no immediate reports of damage, and no tsunami warning was issued. The Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning Centre said there was no threat of a tsunami from the quake. Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said it measured the quake at a magnitude of 6.3 and its epicentre was 10 kilometres deep.

The agency confirmed that the tremor was not strong enough to trigger a tsunami. Indonesia, a country made up of numerous islands in Southeast Asia, is often hit by strong earthquakes because it is located on the Pacific Ocean's seismically active 'Ring of Fire'.
