Citizens' Coalition demands swift prosecution of those involved in attacks on Osman Hadi

The Citizen Coalition, a civic initiative to reform the democratic structure of the state, has demanded that all those involved in the attack on Sharif Osman Hadi, the convener of the Inqilab Mancha, be brought to justice immediately.

The organisation made this demand in a statement today, Saturday.

Expressing strong anger over the shooting of Osman Hadi by miscreants, the Citizen Coalition said in a statement that this incident was planned and is a direct blow to the process of building a new democratic Bangladesh achieved through the student-public movement. The attack on Osman Hadi is a very dangerous incident in the civil life and political context of Bangladesh. Such an 'assassination' attempt on influential top leaders at the political and social levels disrupts the democratic progress of the state, as well as endangering the overall security system and stability of the country.

The statement further said that the Citizen Coalition believes that this attack is an eye-opener to show how much the lives of many other young frontline July fighters like Osman Hadi are at risk! The organisation does not believe that the state has taken sufficient steps to ensure the safety of the July fighters.

In this context, the organisation has called on the government to take urgent measures to create an institutional and legal framework to provide special protection to the leaders of the July movement.

The statement said that despite the killing of more than a hundred political activists in the past year, the law enforcement agencies have failed to identify and bring the perpetrators to justice in most cases. This raises serious questions about the efficiency, impartiality and effectiveness of the state's law enforcement agencies.

The Civil Coalition also said that despite its promises, the interim government has not taken effective steps to reform the police and other law enforcement agencies. In this situation, they are concerned about how peaceful and impartial the national elections in February will be. Civil society has called on the government to ensure a peaceful environment and provide every citizen with the opportunity to vote safely.

Wishing a speedy recovery for Osman Hadi, the statement further said, "We call on the state to ensure the highest level of medical assistance for Osman Hadi, who is undergoing treatment." At the same time, the statement called on everyone, including the government, to remain united so that such tragic incidents do not happen again in the future.
