Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu initially praised Ahmed Al Ahmed for his “Jewish heroism” after he snatched a gun from a gunman on Sydney’s Bondi Beach, Australia. But he later learned that the “hero” who saved countless lives on Bondi Beach is actually a Muslim.
Al-Jazeera reported earlier that Al-Ahmed, a 43-year-old fruit vendor born in Syria, had grabbed one of the attackers and taken his weapon away, drawing international attention.
In a speech in Hebrew broadcast on Israel’s ultra-nationalist Channel 14 on Sunday, Netanyahu described the act as “Jewish heroism.”
“I saw a video of a Jew,” Netanyahu said, according to translations from various Israeli English-language websites. That man grabbed one of the killers, took his weapon and saved who knows how many lives.”

When Netanyahu later complained in English about the Australian government’s inaction against anti-Semitism, Netanyahu seemed to correct himself.
“We saw the work of a brave man — it turned out later that he was a brave man. I salute him,” Netanyahu said, “who stopped one of the terrorists from killing innocent Jews.”
Netanyahu and other Israeli leaders have repeatedly linked Australia’s recognition of a Palestinian state to Sunday’s shootings.
