Iranian Nobel Peace Prize laureate Nargis Mohammadi has been arrested. She was arrested by Iranian security and police forces on Friday. Nargis's brother Mehdi reported this news, the Nargis Foundation reported.
The Paris-based Nargis Foundation said that Iranian security and police forces arrested Nargis Mohammadi. She was arrested at a memorial service for lawyer Khosro Alikordi. Khosro is a well-known Iranian lawyer. His body was recently recovered from his office.
The British media outlet The Guardian reported that Nargis's husband, Taghi Rahmani, who lives in Paris, also confirmed his wife's arrest. He wrote in a post on social media that Nargis was arrested at a memorial service for Khosro Alikordi in the eastern Iranian city of Mashhad. Another top Iranian human rights activist, Sepideh Bahlian, was also arrested with her.
Nargis Mohammadi won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023. She spent most of two decades in Tehran's Evin Prison.

Nargis was sentenced to a total of 31 years for activities against national security and spreading propaganda. Nargis was also vocal about human rights while in prison. Nargis underwent surgery in November 2024. The surgery was to remove a tumour-like lesion from a bone in her lower right leg. Doctors suspected it was cancer. The month after the surgery, authorities suspended her sentence for three weeks. It was then thought that Nargis would have to return to prison soon. However, she did not have to go to prison again.
