A major controversy has erupted over a college entrance exam in South Korea. Students have complained that the English questions in this exam have been made so difficult that they are like deciphering ancient scripts. In such a situation, the top official in charge of the exam resigned on Wednesday.
In South Korea, the college entrance exam is called ‘Suneung’. Two of the most difficult questions in this exam were on the philosophy of law of the famous philosopher Immanuel Kant and on video games. Philosophy is a subject of much understanding, and students had to be lost trying to answer the question on DDO games.
The exam was given for 70 minutes. There were 45 questions to answer. Only 3 per cent of students got the highest grade in English in this exam this year. Last year, the rate of such students was 6 per cent. Regarding this year’s questions, South Korean English professor Jung Chae-kyun said, “The questions are not impossible to answer, but they are very confusing. It is really annoying.”
