Trump is deciding who the Democratic presidential candidate will be in the next election

President Donald Trump’s aggressive policies and their implementation programs are not only reshaping the US economy and immigration system; they are also putting several Democratic governors on the national stage. They are gaining a foothold as potential candidates for the 2028 presidential election.

California Governor Gavin Newsom, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, and Maryland Governor Wes Moore are using Trump’s moves to mobilise their party’s support base. They are making their differences with the White House clear to supporters and voters. They are also building political networks outside their own states.

The US midterm elections are next year. Ahead of those elections, Trump is pressuring Republican states to redistrict their congressional districts so that the election results will favour Trump’s party.

On the other hand, Trump is waging a military-style anti-immigration campaign in Democratic cities. The president’s sweeping cuts to federal spending have also created strong resistance among Democrats. This resistance has now become a political advantage for governors. They are getting a chance to increase their profile by opposing Trump.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has taken a countermeasure against Trump’s efforts to redistrict congressional districts. He successfully introduced a ballot measure in his state that could help Democrats win additional seats in next year’s congressional elections.

Newsom celebrated his success by speaking to Democratic supporters in Houston, Texas. It has given him a chance to increase his profile outside his home state.

Newsom is considering running for the Democratic nomination in the 2028 presidential election.

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, on the other hand, has positioned himself as a defender of immigrants against Trump's repressive immigration policies. Last week, he signed a law that would prevent federal officials from arresting anyone in his state in schools and courthouses. The new law would ban federal officials from arresting anyone in those two places.

The Illinois governor has been a keynote speaker at Democratic rallies in New Hampshire and Minnesota, urging his party to take a bolder stance against Trump.

Maryland Governor Wes Moore has been a vocal critic of Trump's efforts to reduce federal workers and cut the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) for low-income families during the latest government shutdown.

Moore responded to Trump's move by reinstating full SNAP benefits in his state. He has framed his move as a direct protest of Trump's policies and has campaigned extensively on behalf of Democrats in swing states.

The governor's moves have brought relief and enthusiasm to Democrats, who were looking for a boost after Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris lost to Trump in the presidential election last year and Republicans took control of Congress.

Mike Doyle, chairman of the Harris County Democratic Party in Houston, attended Newsom's speech. He said he had never seen such enthusiasm at a rally. He thanked Newsom for coming to Texas.

Texas is a state where Democrats are hoping to strengthen their position in the midterms and future elections.

Democratic strategists say there is frustration among many supporters about how the Democratic Party will define itself and what its goals will be under Trump. These governors are capitalising on that frustration among Democratic supporters.

“If you ask Democratic voters what they most want from their elected officials, it’s to put checks and balances on Trump,” said Democratic pollster Cornell Belcher.

Belcher said he’s seen it before. He was a pollster for Barack Obama. The Illinois politician was a relative unknown at the time and was gaining national popularity for his opposition to the George W. Bush administration’s Iraq war.

But it’s not just Newsom, Pritzker and Moore; several other Democratic governors have also been named as candidates for the 2028 presidential election.

It is being said that Michigan's Gretchen Whitmer, Pennsylvania's Josh Shapiro, and Kentucky's Andy Beshear may also participate in the race to become a presidential candidate.
