US President Donald Trump has warned the Islamic State (IS) militant group that two US soldiers and a US civilian interpreter were killed in an attack in Syria, saying the group would be met with a "strong response".
The attack on US forces took place on Saturday. It was the first US military loss of life in a single attack in Syria since the fall of President Bashar al-Assad a year ago.
The US government and media reports said three more US soldiers were wounded in the attack. At least two Syrian soldiers were also wounded.
The attack was first reported by the US Central Command (CENTCOM). It described the attack as a "sneak attack. CENTCOM said an IS gunman carried out the attack.
In a post on social media, Trump said he had been assured that the injured US soldiers were "fine". But he warned that IS would face "severe consequences" for the attack.
Trump wrote, “This is an attack by ISIS against the United States and Syria. The attack took place in a dangerous area of Syria that is not fully under their (government) control.” He also said that Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa is very angry and concerned about this attack. This attack will be responded to very strongly.
Like Trump, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth also warned. He said that severe action will be taken against anyone who attacks US troops.
In a post on social media, Hegseth wrote, “Know that if you target an American citizen anywhere in the world, you will spend the rest of your short lives in fear that the United States will find you, capture you and brutally kill you.”

The news of yesterday’s attack was first reported by the US Central Command (Centcom). They described the attack as a “sneak attack. Centcom said that an ISIS gunman carried out the attack.
Hegseth later said that “coalition forces” had killed the attacker.
Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said the attack took place near the Palmyra area in the central Homs region of Syria. However, details of the individuals involved were not immediately available.
The US Department of Defence said the incident was under investigation.
