Two Kolkata ministers fight over Messi, and all the chaos that followed

Why is this happening?

Kolkata's Salt Lake Stadium turned into a battlefield on Saturday over the inability to see Lionel Messi properly.

Spectators vandalised the stadium, broke the fence and entered the field, and looted various items, including carpets, chairs, and flower pots, leading to the arrest of Sutadru Dutta, the organiser of Messi's arrival in India.

The West Bengal government has formed an investigation committee to find out why such a chaotic situation occurred around Messi's arrival. Various Indian media outlets have also tried to find out where, how, and why such an incident began.

According to some media reports, the incident began with a fight between two ministers who wanted to 'capture' Messi. Apart from this, the crowd of actors and political leaders who came to the event as 'VIPs' was the reason why the audience in the gallery could not see Messi.

Kolkata's Anandabazar Patrika newspaper wrote in its report that the chaos began with a fight between two ministers over Messi. The media wrote that Saturday's disaster was caused by a fight between West Bengal Fire Minister Sujit Basu and Sports Minister Arup Biswas.

Messi arrived in Kolkata on Friday night. Since then, the fight between the two ministers has started around him. Anandabazar wrote in their report that Sujit took Messi into his 'capture' as soon as he set foot at the Kolkata airport.

Messi checked into the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Kolkata. There, Messi was surrounded by the Fire Minister's people. Sports Minister Arup was not allowed to approach him. Sujit was with his family in that hotel; there were also people of his choice. From unveiling a 70-foot statue of Messi in front of his club Sribhumi to interacting with the World Cup-winning Argentine star, Sujit was active everywhere.

On the other hand, Sports Minister Arup wanted to show his influence on Messi in the stadium. So, as soon as Messi entered the field, he surrounded him with his people. There were many entrepreneurs and officials associated with the Kolkata stadium, footballers and Tollywood celebrities. The entire time Messi was on the field for about twenty minutes, he was surrounded by the Sports Minister's people. In this, the Messi whom the public had come to the field to see after spending thousands of taka, was overwhelmed.

Another Indian media outlet, India Today, wrote that one of the reasons for the chaos was the uncontrolled VIP culture. As soon as Messi stepped onto the field, he was surrounded by a crowd of officials, invited guests and photographers. As a result, he did not get the opportunity to move freely or pay attention to the spectators in the gallery.

NDTV journalist Rittik Mondal wrote in his report that Messi was surrounded by several dignitaries and politicians during his short stay at the Salt Lake Stadium. As a result, the spectators in the gallery could not see him properly.

The result of all this?

In a video that went viral on social media, the spectator, in response to a reporter's question, said, "I paid 10,000 rupees for the ticket, but I didn't see Lionel Messi's face. I only saw the faces of the leaders. So I'm taking this carpet home to practice."
