US President Donald Trump is frustrated with Russia and Ukraine. He is quite upset that he has not been able to convince the two countries to stop the war with his plan. In the meantime, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced that he has received a new proposal from the United States. There, too, it has been said that the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine will be handed over to Russia.
The Russia-Ukraine war has been going on for almost four years. White House spokesperson Caroline Levitt spoke to reporters on Thursday about Trump's dissatisfaction with the war. She said that President Trump is very disappointed with both sides of this war. He does not want to discuss it anymore. He wants work. He wants this war to end.
Since taking office this year, Trump has made no less effort to stop the war. He recently presented a 28-point peace plan. However, Kiev objected, claiming that the plan was too close to Moscow. Later, it was revised to 20 points. However, US representatives were unable to reach an agreement after discussing this plan with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Proposal for a 'free economic zone'
The biggest obstacle to the agreement between Russia and Ukraine is the Donbas region. Russian forces control almost all of it. Russia wants to annex the entire Donbas to itself in exchange for a ceasefire. However, Ukraine is reluctant to accept this. In the meantime, Russia has annexed the Donbas, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions of Ukraine through referendums. However, it has not received international recognition.
Zelensky spoke on Thursday about Trump's new proposal regarding this territory. He told reporters in Kiev that the United States has proposed establishing a 'free economic zone' in the territory controlled by Ukraine in Donbas. Ukrainian troops will have to withdraw from that region. Russian forces will not enter there either. However, it was not said who will govern this region.
In addition, according to the new proposal, Zelensky mentioned that the regions where Russian troops are stationed in southern Ukraine will not withdraw either. However, Moscow will give up the areas it has occupied in the northern part of the country. Zelensky said that the opinion of the people of Ukraine or a referendum is needed to secede any territory of Ukraine.
The Ukrainian president raised another objection to the new US proposal. Ukrainian troops are mainly stationed in a small area of Donetsk in the Donbas. Zelensky said, “Why can’t the other side of the war (Russia) retreat the same distance in the opposite direction?” He also noted that “many big questions” surrounding Trump’s peace proposal have not yet been resolved.
Next week is important.
Ukraine's European allies discussed the issue in a video conference after Trump's new proposal. Then, a statement from the office of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said, "This is an important moment for Ukraine and its people. It is also important for the security of the Euro-Atlantic region that we have."
The next week is very important for finding a path to a just and sustainable peace for Ukraine, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Thursday. On social media, she said that sustainable means a peace agreement that does not have the possibility of future conflicts and destabilising the European security architecture.
Trump has tried to keep Europe at a distance in his efforts to stop the Russia-Ukraine war. He wants to negotiate directly between Russia and Ukraine through the diplomacy of his special envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner. However, the United States has not set a deadline for an agreement. However, Washington wants to reach a solution before Christmas.
