Trump spoke to Prime Minister Modi
President Donald Trump spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the phone again, a White House official confirmed. However, the official did not clarify what Modi spoke to Trump about.
Narendra Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a post on X - reviewed the progress of bilateral relations with India and discussed regional and international issues.
India's relations with the United States
Modi and Trump have spoken three times since the US doubled tariffs on India to 50 per cent. The tariff hike has hit India's textile, chemical and food exports, including shrimp. Modi described his conversation with Trump as "warm and cordial." He added that the two countries will continue to work together for global peace, stability and prosperity. Trade talks between India and the US collapsed in late July after India refused to open its market to US agricultural products. New Delhi also refused to acknowledge Trump's role in mediating during the India-Pakistan conflict.
Talks between the two countries are still ongoing. Among them, there are indications that Indian oil refineries have started reducing oil imports from Russia under pressure after US sanctions on Russia's largest oil producer, Rosneft and another company, Lukoil. The sanctions are a tactic to increase US pressure on Moscow over the Ukraine war.
