Six peacekeepers were killed in a drone attack on a UN base in Sudan. All of them are Bangladeshi citizens. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has issued a statement strongly condemning the incident.
The UN Secretary-General said, “I strongly condemn the brutal drone attack targeting a UN peacekeeping force logistics base in Kadugli, Sudan. The attack on UN peacekeepers may constitute a war crime under international law.”
The attack took place on Saturday at the UN building in Kadugli, Sudan’s Kordofan region.
Guterres’ statement said that eight other peacekeepers were injured in the attack. All of the casualties were Bangladeshi citizens. They were serving with the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA).
Guterres said, “The attack on peacekeepers in South Kordofan today (Saturday) is unacceptable. Those responsible must be held accountable.’
All the peacekeepers killed in the attack were Bangladeshis. They were serving with the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA). Eight other peacekeepers were injured in the attack.
The Sudanese army has blamed the attack on the country’s paramilitary force, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Sudan has been embroiled in a civil war for more than two years. The fighting is between the country’s army and the RSF.
The RSF did not immediately comment on the attack.
The Sudanese army said in a statement that the attack was a clear demonstration of the destructive tactics of the rebel militia and those behind it.
The Sudanese army posted a video on social media. In the video, thick black smoke can be seen rising from a location. It said it was a UN facility.
Professor Muhammad Yunus, the chief advisor to the interim government of Bangladesh, has expressed deep shock and concern over the incident of the Bangladeshi peacekeeper being killed.

Sudan and South Sudan are in dispute over the oil-rich region of Abyei, where the attack took place. South Sudan became an independent country after seceding from Sudan in 2011. Since then, a UN peacekeeping mission has been deployed there.
Abyei, located on the border of the two countries, is a special administrative region.
Guterres called on Sudan to reach a ceasefire now. Sudan has been in a civil war since April 2023. The power struggle between the army and the RSF has spread beyond the capital, Khartoum, to different parts of the country.
More than 40,000 people have been killed in the conflict so far. Human rights groups say the actual death toll is much higher.
The main fighting in recent times has been around Sudan's Kordofan, especially after the RSF took control of the El-Fasher area. It was the last stronghold of the Sudanese army in the western Darfur region.
The attack on the peacekeepers in Sudan came just a month after the UN Security Council voted to extend the UNISFA peacekeeping mission for another year.
The civil war has created one of the world's worst humanitarian crises and has pushed parts of Sudan to the brink of famine.

Bangladesh is one of the main contributors to UN peacekeeping missions deployed in various war-torn and conflict-torn regions of the world. Bangladeshi troops have been deployed in Abyei for a long time.
